Smoking Isn’t Necessarily the Cause
In an article by NPR, the amount of people developing cancer has been increasing world wide, and in many cases are not connected to smoking. Research is currently being conducting according to NPR to determine whether chemicals may be a big influence on whether there is a link.
What Does this Mean?
Currently in the United States over 80,000 chemicals are used. Many of which have not been tested for cancerous affects. There is a stretch of the Mississippi River from New Orleans to Baton Rouge, La. loaded with chemical plants known as “Cancer Alley” because of all the health problems found in the area.
With the increasing number of cases of cancer in people, there may be a correlation. The only way to know for sure is through research. It is too early in the process to tell, but should there be links found between the chemicals being used and cancer in people, something will need to be done. Legislation may need to be drafted in order to prevent this. This event could change the way our chemical plants deal with their waste, and switch out the current chemicals we use currently for no cancerous ones.
