What is THON?
THON is a student run philanthropy that raises money for the Four Diamond fund to help support children fight pediatric cancer. The Four Diamond fund helps cover the costs of medical bills and more. THON takes place at many schools across the country, but the one at the Pennsylvania State university is one of the largest, raising millions of dollars.
New Sanctions Placed on Fundraising
With the end of THON 2019 the implementation of new sanctions on students fundraising has come as a shock. Students feel as if the THON committee is making it harder and harder for students to raise money. After 2016’s incident brought about the sanction on what is known as “canning”, students have been finding it harder and harder to raise money.
The issuance of another sanction preventing students from traveling more than 15 miles away from the respective campus’ brings about the question of how this will affect profits. The last sanction imposed accrued a loss of 3.2 million dollars. This new implementation simply sounds like raising money will become even harder. Officials from THON are unsure of how the sanction will affect the profits, but are “confident” that they will be able to fulfill the mission.
The outlook on profits doesn’t look well considering the affect of the last sanction, but one thing for sure to look out for will be how students will continue to raise money in the face of this new challenge.
