Spoilers
I have had a lot of work to do this week, so I haven’t been able to watch the fifth episode yet, but I am still going to do a review on episodes 3 and 4. Almost all of episode 3 is spent on a sub-plot regarding two characters that were Joel’s friends. It is a really heartbreaking episode. Bill was a doomsday prepper who was more than equipped when the pandemic broke out. He fortified his home and the surrounding area and was able to survive for years without issue. One day, one of the traps he had set outside of his compound went off and he ran into Frank. He was very hostile at first, worried that Frank had come to steal from him or take over his shelter. Soon, Bill lets Frank in and they begin to live together. They eventually begin a relationship until Frank falls ill. He becomes very sick and knows he doesn’t have long left to live, so he asks Bill to plan out one more great day with him and then put poison in his wine so he falls asleep and doesn’t wake up. At the end of the day, we find out that Bill actually poisoned both of their drinks and they both passed away in their sleep. This story really humanizes the people left on Earth, it changes the story from an adrenaline-filled apocalypse show to a show about how people behave when the world falls apart. Bill’s house was one of Joel’s stops when he would do smuggling runs, so when Joel shows up with Ellie, he finds a note telling the story of what happened.
Episode 4 brings us back to the adrenaline-rush apocalypse-style show that we had previously seen. Joel and Ellie head into Kansas City, trying to make their way west toward Wyoming. They find that Kansas City is now a fallen FEDRA settlement. It is controlled by rebels who are trying to search for a former friend named Henry who betrayed them. They mistake Joel and Ellie for mercenaries hired by Henry and are extremely hostile towards them. The episode showcases Joel and Ellie as they navigate the streets of Kansas City trying to escape the rebels attacking them.
So far, The Last of Us has been amazing. I am very excited for episode 5; one of my friends told me it is his favorite yet.
Good job this week!
