The Last of Us (Episodes 5-7)

I took a break from The Last of Us for a few weeks and now I am catching up. I still have the last two episodes to watch. First, I will talk about my favorite parts of each episode and then talk about what I am expecting from the next two.

Episode 5 is a very entertaining action-packed episode. It has so many tense moments where you don’t know what is going to happen next. First, they are being chased by the rebel group in Kansas City, then they are running from what is probably the biggest swarm of infected in the entire show. The episode ends with an absolutely shocking and heartbreaking twist that I don’t want to spoil for anyone who hasn’t seen it.

Episode 6 is a lot less chaotic than its predecessor. It balances the adrenaline-filled episode 5 with a slower-paced story-oriented episode. It starts off very tense as Ellie and Joel are being held at gunpoint, but they soon find that the place where they are being taken is the home of Joel’s brother Tommy, who they set out to find at the beginning of the show. Tommy and Joel finally reconnect and talk about how to get Ellie to the firefly facility to try to find a cure. They are attacked by raiders when they arrive and Joel is left severely wounded.

This brings us to Episode 7 which consists of Ellie having a flashback to her time in FEDRA school. While she tries to figure out what to do about the injured Joel, we get a look into her past. The most important part of this flashback is when one of her friends (who ran away from FEDRA school) comes back and sneaks into her room. They decide to go out and explore Boston. They break into a rundown mall and start looking at all the old stores and even the arcade. After spending the night there, Ellie’s friend confesses that she is leaving the containment zone with the fireflies and that is the last time they will see each other. Soon after, an infected attacks them and bites both; Ellie finds out she is immune, and her friend becomes infected. Although it gave some insight into Ellie’s past, it was pretty boring until the end. It was definitely the weakest link in season 1.

I am hoping that episode 8 and 9 give some closure around the firefly situation. All we know is that the fireflies weren’t at the research facility they said that they would be, and now we don’t know what is next for Ellie.
