The Hunger Games

These movies recently got put back on Netflix to build hype for the new movie that is based in the same universe. I hadn’t seen them in a while, so I figured I would give them a watch and write a review for them. I have only gotten to the first one so far, so that will be the only one I write about today.

I think that the dystopian world that this series takes place in is one of the main things that makes The Hunger Games such an interesting story. The world consists of 12 districts that are all very impoverished. They all work to sustain the Capitol, which holds this world up by nothing but instilling fear in the people. The basic backstory is that a rebellion to overthrow the Capitol happened a few decades before the events of the movie. The Capitol was able to defeat the rebellion and the punishment is that each of the 12 districts has to sacrifice 2 people that are randomly picked to fight to the death once per year. The fight is called the Hunger Games. Anyone who resists or acts against the will of the Capitol is murdered with no questions asked.

The main character, Katniss, is a girl from district 12 who volunteers to fight in the place of her little sister that is picked to fight in the Hunger Games. You instantly have empathy for her when you see the conditions that people in district 12 live in. It is the poorest of the districts, almost everyone is scrounging for every meal they eat. We find out that Katniss sneaks outside the fence of district 12 to hunt for food and to sell parts of what she kills for money. She ends up using her experience being in the woods and using a bow to her advantage in the Hunger Games to come out victorious. Her and the other district 12 tribute, Peeta, work together near the end to survive and are allowed to share the victory together.

The Hunger Games is an excellent story that was a staple of my childhood. It was one of the books that everyone read in middle school and then went to see the movies. I know most of the people reading this have probably seen the movies, but if you haven’t I recommend watching them. Rewatching them was a very nostalgic experience. They are fun and entertaining movies that are pretty unique.
