Today, the internet is home to billions of websites. Every website differs in its content, design, and targeted audience. While not every website strives to have the most innovative design and layout, this blog post will focus on one-page websites that pay close attention to these features. Another feature that this blog will cover is the responsiveness of one-page websites. Since the first iPhone release, almost every website prioritizes its design for mobile screens over desktop screens. Now, more than ever, people use their mobile devices to browse the web, and I believe this will only advance, and more one-page websites will be developed and designed for smaller screens, like smartwatches, AR, and VR glasses. One-page websites are known for their innovative takes on web design and layout and integrate well with mobile devices due to being designed for scrolling interactions.
Portfolio Website – Mees Verberne
For a portfolio website, one of my favorites is a personal website of a Hollander front-end developer Mees Verberne. This website’s primary purpose is to showcase Mees’ skills, help promote himself when applying to jobs, and showcase his projects to other developers. This website’s audience is hiring managers, people looking for developers’ services, and the developer community. The website’s key elements are large fonts, large images, and a red and black color scheme.
In my opinion, this website is successful at making viewers want to scroll through the page and explore the various design and layout elements. The website is also responsive and looks great on different screen sizes. The website also gives a feeling of being an art book or an art magazine. In my opinion, when designing their website, Mees Verberne wanted the website to look like a piece of art and not just a portfolio website. That is most likely because the artist has worked on various projects for filmmakers and magazines.
Product Page – Spaced
For a product page, I chose a company called Spaced. The website aims to demonstrate to potential users their mobile application, its design, and features. The website’s targeted audience is the people who want to learn about Spaced’s mobile application. The design approach was to create a minimalistic website that provided the most important information about its features. The website’s key visual elements are large fonts, short paragraphs, and many images that demonstrate its UI and features.
The website does a great job at promoting the application and demonstrating to users what features they will get if they download the app and sign up for the account. The website is also responsive and makes the content presentable on devices with different screen sizes. I don’t really think that this website relates to other genres of art. This website looks like many other websites that showcase various mobile applications, developer tools, and new technologies. I think the designer wanted to design a page highlighting its key features and how it might be better than other apps in a similar space.
Infographic – Covid Tracker
For the infographic website, I chose the website that shows users various data about the coronavirus. The sites’ audience is people who want to see coronavirus health data that is up-to-date. The design approach was to create a website that presented this data in an accessible and minimalistic way.
I think the website does an outstanding job at presenting users with various coronavirus data. It has a simple and clean UI and only shows the most important data. Not only that, but the website also does not need to be refreshed because the data refreshes in real-time. The website is also responsive and compactly provides the same data for mobile devices as the desktop version. This website relates to other websites that provide similar kinds of information. It is not very unique but cleanly provides the data. In my opinion, the designer of the website wanted to design an experience that provided complex data in a more readable and welcoming way.
