The Center for Virtual/Material Studies (CVMS) supports research in both Technical and Digital Art History with the aim of fostering synthetic, collaborative scholarship across these fields.

Materiality, Computation + Visual Culture

The CVMS supports innovative research – at the intersection of materiality studies and computation – and teaching collaborations to enhance understanding of cultural heritage.

Research + Training

The portfolio of research projects and workshops based in the Center for Virtual/Material Studies is expanding rapidly. We will feature ongoing explorations, symposia, and training events on the Research page of this site.

CVMS staff offer advise to faculty and students in areas of research, imaging, digital art history tools, publishing, and arts-related copyright questions. Training and support are provided in a variety of digital tools and resources for teaching and academic research projects.

The CVMS staff also maintain a collection of digital images reflecting the Department of Art History’s research and curriculum.

Facilities

The CVMS is located in a collaborative learning space in 241 Borland Building, equipped with computers with DAH-specific software, flatbed and slide scanners, a large-screen monitor, an Olympus CX43 microscope, two floor looms, a growing materials collections, and flexible seating.
