Welcome to my Blog! My name is Victoria, and I’m a Freshman in Aerospace Engineering at Penn State’s Schreyer Honors College. As you may have read on the homepage, the point of this blog is to provide you with updates about Aerospace Engineering events, mostly related to a class I’m taking known as Sailplane (AERSP 204H). I always enjoy learning about the authors behind the writing, so I thought I’d let you guys know who I am as a person. I grew up in a little town called Nazareth, which is just outside of the slightly bigger “city” of Bethlehem, PA. I like to say I come from “Big Sky Country,” because their were wide open fields just behind my house and a nice big sky with very little light pollution. A fun fact about my hometown is that Martin Guitar was actually started and still remains in Nazareth. Which is neat for me, since I taught myself guitar, along with Piano and Viola. In high school, I played soccer for a little while before switching to tennis. I often say that tennis was one of my favorite parts of high school, and my entire team was like family. I also ran hurdles for the track team for two years, which was interesting in its own right! I did many activities outside of just sports, but the main thing I’ve always loved is being outside. And truth be told, if I don’t get to spend a little time outside each day, no matter how crappy the weather is, I start getting stir crazy. In addition, as a child, for as long as I can remember, I had always wanted to be a meteorologist (a tornado chaser, to be precise). I always had tornado emergency kits prepared (even though we live in mountainous eastern PA), I typed up reports about the causes and effects of tornadoes, and I even watched videos about storm chasers and what work they were doing. I still find it very interesting, but I think some time around middle school I realized that riding around in a car with weather equipment strapped to it, while sitting in the path of a tornado, might not be the most stable job. From that point, I really bounced around with what I wanted to be when I was older. I thought about just meteorology, environmental engineering, and even geology. However once I took my first AP Calculus class, I knew I had to do something with math in the future, because it was by far the most interesting and engaging class I had every taken. That’s where Aerospace Engineering came in; since I knew I wanted to do something in engineering, and I had an interest in flight thanks to my Grandfather, who was a pilot. After searching for awhile, I ended up at Penn State, and that’s how I got to where I am today! Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this rather long-winded explanation of who I am, and I hope you enjoy my blog!
