SPring 2023

Local Lion Heroes

A strong community is built from the hands of local heroes that join together to make a better tomorrow for all. As advocated through the United Nation’s Sustainable Development goals, our global community is fighting for (1) no poverty, (2) zero hunger, (3) good health and well-being, (4) quality education, (5) gender equality, (6) clean water and (7) affordable, clean energy for all… just to name a few.

In Spring 2023 the Penn State World Campus Sustainability Club is called to action our Penn State community to take action in the communities they love.

We’re asking you to dedicated at least 1 volunteer hour with your favorite non-profit organization or community group in the name of Earth Day, which is on April 22nd. In doing this, you’re joining the collective voice of the people who want to build a better future for us and the generations to come.

And as a thank you for your work in your community, we’ll enter your name in a drawing to win a Penn State goodie box valued up to $100!

We have them outlined up above, or if you want to learn more about each goal and the key actions involved you can read more about them on the United Nation’s SDG website.

Some larger organizations that support the SDGs include:

Unicef

ONE
DesIgn for ChANge
Project Everyone
Save the Children
One Million Women
The Hunger Project

How can I find an organization local to me?

Think about the audience that you want to support, and the work that you would like to do.. Some of examples include: farms, community centers, shelters, museums, retirement homes, season events, local clean ups, watersheds, and land trust organizations just to name a few.

Once you have a better idea of the population you want to support, start searching for those organizations near you!

Here is a video of a young activist that took their passion about the ocean and their resources of community to build their own non-profit!
