“I keep checking MyPennState…”

We hear this a lot from students (and parents). They tell us they keep checking MyPennState but it has had the same message for weeks. Or, they’ll tell us they sent their transcripts at the beginning of the week but it still says in MyPennState that they’re missing.

To help folks understand MyPennState and why it acts the way it does, we wanted to explain a little bit more about how the system works.

1) The Summary Review

This is a static element of MyPennState, meaning it won’t change, even if something in

your application changes. It is intended to serve as a snapshot of your application, as it looked when it was first submitted.

2) Changes to majors or campuses

If you decide to change your choice of major or campus, you will need to contact our office to do so. We are happy to make those types of changes but those updates won’t be reflected in MyPennState.

3) The Status Update

We saved the most important for last. The status update indicates your progress toward a decision and you should keep an eye on it. Most notably, it will let you know whether or not your application is complete, meaning all the required documents are here and the online application was submitted.

If your application is not complete, the status update will tell you what we’re still waiting for. It’s important to realize that this information does not update immediately upon receipt of your documentation. Rather, it will update once your documents have been processed and added to your file. There can often be a delay between when a transcript or score arrives in our office and when it is reflected in MyPennState. Those delays are typically longer the closer we are to a deadline. Please note that we use the posted date for any deadline considerations so, as long as your materials are sent before a deadline, they will be treated as on time, even if they’re not reflected in MyPennState prior to the deadline.

Also, once your application is complete, you will get a notice that your application is currently under review. Please keep in mind that this review can take weeks or months, depending on when you applied. As we’ve said before, the bulk of our decisions for anyone who applied before November 30 will go out at the end of January. So, there’s no need to obsessively check MyPennState for a decision. If you ignore us and decide that obsessive checking is the way to go, know that MyPennState is updated only once per day so checking it as part of your morning routine or once after school will be sufficient.

Now, go check MyPennState and make sure your application is well on its way to being complete before our November 30 priority filing date.
