Women in Science Profiles

WPSU Penn State’s Women in Science Profiles (WiSci Files) introduces viewers to five local women with diverse careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields through a series of short video profiles. The videos feature aspects of their personal and professional lives, aiming to dispel stereotypes about who STEM professionals are and what their lives are like. In addition to the videos, each of the five profiled women will participate in a live, online chat where will they interact directly with viewers. The women featured in the series include:

Carolina Pulido, Quality Engineer, Minitab

  • Carolina tries to find problems with Minitab’s statistical software before any users do, and she can do that in 5 different languages!

Elena Zavala, Forensic Scientist, Penn State

  • Elena is a chemist-turned-forensic-scientist who combines her desire to help others with her love of science to find better ways to solve challenging missing persons mysteries.

Dr. Felecia Davis, Assistant Professor of Architecture, Penn State

  • Felecia combines art, technology, and science in her work with computational textiles—soft materials that can sense and respond to the world around them.

Michelle Orner, Quality Manager, Penn State’s Berkey Creamery

  • As a food scientist, Michelle makes sure the ice cream we eat is as safe as it delicious!

Dr. Erica Smithwick, Associate Professor of Geography, Penn State

  • Erica’s research has taken her to South Africa and around the U.S. to study biodiversity and the role of forests in global climate change.
