RESCUE ME

Happy Friday Everyone,

This week I’m going to switch from the common facts and tips that I post to a new topic. This week I was aimlessly exploring a dog rescuing site and I realized how sad it is and how in danger a lot of sweet dogs are just because they can’t find a home.

The website I was checking out is rescueme.org (this website also ha adoption services for other animals). First, I just aimlessly scrolled through the dogs that needed homes. Both males and females, all different age groups, with different personality and needs from the owners (including why these dogs didn’t work out with past owners, or where they were rescued from in the past). Next, I decided to switch my search from all dogs to “View Dogs In Danger Only”.

After switching my search criteria I only worsened my own sadness (go figure). Flashing above each dog, the website advertised “This animal could be euthanized if not adopted within the next day or two. NO.

Even worse, the dogs in this section weren’t just old ones, which would make the most sense. Included were puppies and young dogs that just simply did not do well in the home environment that they were given in the past. For example, here is Sophie:

Sophie is a Great Pyrenees, 4 year old dog. She is sweet, timid, and has separation anxiety from her owners. She does well with other animals and suffers from anxious tendencies. SHE LOOKS LIKE THE SWEETEST THING AND COULD BE EUTHANIZED. I find this so sad that such innocent animals can’t find the right home and pretty much die early because of it.

Also, here is Bobby, an American Staffordshire Terrier Mix. This sweet puppy is affectionate, hyper, and healthy. Given away because the woman in the home was fearful of Bobby’s barking, he is also on the list for euthanization. Bobby came to the family extremely malnourished and fearful, and is only working towards full trust.

Thankfully, this website does everything that it can to get animals adopted and take in dogs in need when it can. At the top of the website, there is an option for people to post about the animal they are giving to the shelter and in turn send out the information to tons of adopters in the area. As the website states, many people receive adoption enquiries the same day. Also, for those that are interested in adopting, there is the option to sign up for rescue alerts for certain breeds that an adopter may be interested in. With these efforts, rescue shelters attempt to find dogs their permanent homes quickly to avoid euthanizations.

The website also offers Adoption Stories, in which potential adopters and other visitors to the website can read about the success and happiness of past adoptions through the shelter. Rescueme.org has helped to adopt over 550,000 dogs. If you know anyone interested in adopting any animal, suggest visiting rescue sites relevant to his or her area to help save pets in urgent need.

  1. It’s always sad to think of all the pets that are in danger in shelters across the country. Both of my dogs are rescue dogs, so I know a little bit about how the system works. From my experience, rescue dogs just want a family and are generally the most happy and easy-going dogs you could imagine.

  2. I support no-kill shelters all the way, but I do understand how hard it can be with how many animals are abandoned every day. While it is sad that these dogs are at risk, I’m glad that this shelter does everything in their power to get them adopted before that happens. Such sweet pups are usually just misunderstood.

  3. This made me really sad, especially that they euthanize puppies and young dogs, not just old ones. I have always been interested in rescuing animals; one of my cats is a rescue. When I eventually live on my own, I definitely intend to rescue a dog or two, hopefully from a really nice, caring place like this.
