Move-In

The day was June 26, 2022. It was a gloomy Sunday afternoon that almost promised some rain. I was fresh off of a beach vacation with my friends to celebrate us all graduating high school. I finished packing my luggage and securing my supplies to make what was to be my “home” for the summer as much of a home as I could. I said my goodbyes to my brothers, sisters, and dad before my stepmom and I set off for the two and a half hour journey to campus.

When we got to the parking garage and loaded everything into the cart, the only thing that I could think of was my roommate. I had no idea what to expect. Would we get along? Would we fight? I even asked myself if he would still be my roommate come the end of the summer semester. I opened the door to room 504 and my roommate welcomed my stepmom and me with open arms. I couldn’t have been more relieved because at that moment, I realized that I had a new friend who I was going to be hanging around with for the summer.

After looking at the room for the first time, the three of us decided that we needed to go to the store to get some extra supplies and snacks that we were not sure we needed. We grabbed an abundance of snacks (much more than enough) and some extra supplies/appliances to keep an organized room. Although we still are not exactly organized yet, the room is a work in progress.

After dinner on the first night, we decided that it would be a good idea to leave our door open to anyone who wanted to come and introduce themselves. To our surprise, next to no one even did so much as leave their rooms on the first night, so my roommate and I decided to turn on the hockey game and relax for the rest of the night. It wasn’t until the second night that someone finally stepped out of their room, and those girls are now two of my closest friends on campus.

All in all, my move-in day was one to remember, and for the first time in my life, I now live on my own. I have been looking forward to this moment for years, and it was exactly as I expected it to be. My childhood self would be gleaming from ear to ear seeing me here now being a student at my dream school.
