Sample Ad Analysis

I selected a Chanel ad from Vogue magazine featuring celebrity Margot Robbie. It is a 2 page ad That is showing off the J12 Chanel watch. The target audience for this ad is mainly those located in the upper class who hold high social status. Because the ad is in the Vogue magazine, it can be inferred that the ad is for rich women of high social status from the age range of 20-40 years old. This Chanel ad demonstrates the empowerment of women and also ties the company further with beauty, fashion, and high social status.

The utilization of a flashy celebrity such as Margot Robbie helps to grab the attention of the viewers because she is a woman who is known for her stunning looks, great acting skills, and for being a women’s fashion/beauty influencer. The language of the ad promotes the ideals of women’s beauty and independence. Robbie looking into the camera can be viewed as a symbol of power because of the distinct eye contact being made. This could lead women to believe that to have the self confidence like someone such as Margot Robbie, they need a Chanel J12 Watch. She is also flashing the watch that is then blown up on the second page of the ad to incorporate the idea of Chanel being a power brand into the minds of the audience. If Chanel is then linked with being in a state of power in the fashion world, more people who want to be seen as high status will be influenced to make the purchase.

The whole ad is in old-fashioned black and white. This could be either to show Chanel as a classy brand–old-fashioned is often placed hand in hand with class–or to keep the ad very simplistic–simplicity is a trend that people tend to follow as of late. The blown up graphic of the watch on the second page just advertises the product itself and not the message–logos. The first page graphic is more for the message and influence of the viewers (see paragraph 2).

The use of Margot Robbie in this ad is a nod to the credibility–ethos–of the product. She is a staple in pop culture today and continues to influence men and women–specifically women in the target demographic of upper class 20 to 40 years old. Women being empowered is something that has really taken pop culture by storm, and Margot Robbie in this ad is a staple to feminism. The fact that she is wearing this watch influences women everywhere that wearing Chanel is empowering.

The message to the audience is that wearing Chanel watches is empowering and reflects high status.
