Volcanos, Aerosols, and the Roman Empire

A recent article in Physics Today links the eruption of a volcano on Umnak Island in Alaska to agricultural failure in the Roman Empire and the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44BCE. The millions of tons of aerosols sent into the atmosphere led to cooling and then the failure of the Roman crops.
