Offering an opportunity for Penn State College of Medicine researchers and students to showcase their innovative and impactful applications of biological imaging in their fields of study.
Email your photo entry to: hchen3@pennstatehealth.psu.edu. (See details below)
The competition aims to promote the advancement of biological imaging as a tool for understanding life sciences and to foster interdisciplinary collaborations among researchers from different backgrounds and disciplines. The competition welcomes submissions from all areas of biological imaging, including but not limited to:
- Light and Electron microscopy
- Nuclear Magnetic Resonance
- X-Ray Micro Computed Tomography
- Image Processing and Analysis
The submissions will be evaluated by a panel of experts based on their originality, significance, quality, clarity, and asethetics. The winners will receive prizes and recognition at the Wild Onions Premiere event in May 2024. The competition is open to researchers and students from Penn State College of Medicine who are interested in advancing biological imaging in the life sciences.
Eligibility:
- Open to members (Faculty, Staff, and Students) of Penn State College of Medicine. Entrants must be a member at the time of submission of entries.
- Only one entry per person is allowed.
- The subject matter of competition entries is flexible but must reflect research in Penn State College of Medicine.
- Images that have won prizes in other competitions are not eligible.
- Any type of biological imaging (light and electron microscopy, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, X-ray Micro Computed Tomography, etc.) is acceptable for submission. Macro photography is not. Ethical image enhancement, as permitted by the journal Nature, is allowed.
- Permission must be given by the laboratory head to submit unpublished data.
- Permission must be obtained by the journal and the paper must be cited if the entrant were to use published images. Only images obtained from manuscripts that are published by the entrant’s lab are permitted.
Submission:
- Send your entry by email (format: 10 x 11.96 cm 300 dpi) via the OneDrive link to: hchen3@pennstatehealth.psu.edu.
- Entrants must supply their name, address, and email address and clearly they are the creator of the submitted image.
- Your entry should adopt the file name as initial_surname.png (for example: a_einstein.png.)
- Entrants should supply a concise stand-alone caption limited to 100 words as an MS Word document, labeled initial_surname_caption.doc. The caption must also cite the instrument type used and the instrument’s funding number. For example, for an image obtained on the Leica SP8 STED microscope in the Advanced Light Microscopy core facility, the RRID must be included (RRID: SCR_0225526). The type of image processing conducted must also be described (deconvolution, gamma correction, etc.).
- A caption outlining what the images contain and the identity of the objects being labeled via the fluorescence (ex. Green=actin). The caption should also include the scientific impact of the research.
- Entries that do not conform to the entry requirements will be disqualified.
- Identify the Co-Creators: Clearly identify the individuals who are considered co-creators and are eligible to share the prize. Each image can have up to three creators. Each member of COM can only send one image as a single creator or co-creator.
- Determine the Allocation Percentage: The allocation can be equal or proportionate to each co-creator’s involvement, the co-creators should claim the allocation percentage of the prize when they send the image if they won the prize. The signatures of all co-creators, indicate their acceptance and agreement to abide by the rule.
