Dr. Evensen’s Short Bio:
DorothyEvensen is Professor ofEducation and Senior Scientist in the Center for the Study of Higher Education at Penn State. She received her Ph.D. in educational psychology at New York University in 1991. Her dissertation explored reading strategies used by law students who differed significantly in terms of their first-year academic performance. She has had three books published: The End of thePipeline: A Journey of Recognition for African Americans Entering the Legal Profession, co-authored with Carla Pratt,Associate Dean of the Dickinson School of Law at Penn State, Problem-based learning: A research perspective on learning interactions, co-edited with Cindy Hmelo-Silver, Professor of Educational Psychology at Indiana University, and Reconsidering the role of university-based reading clinics in the new age of literacy, co-edited with the late Peter Mosenthal of Syracuse University. She has received funding for many of her research projects, most of which focus literacy development, teaching, and learning in professional educational contexts. Her most recent work centers on the development of law students’ reading and reasoning capabilities. Professor Evensen was a lead item-writer for the reading comprehension section of the Law School Admissions Test and has conducted numerous reading workshops at various law schools and for the Council of Legal Educational Opportunity summer fellows program.
