Interstellar – Passion Blog 5
Interstellar (2014) was produced and written by brothers Christopher and Jonathan Nolan, which follows the adventure of former pilot Cooper after strange circumstance brings him on a secret mission into a wormhole in space that leads to possible new life-sustaining planets after Earth becomes inhospitable from disease and famine. I was only recently introduced to its movie by my roommate, and it has quickly become a favorite. My favorite overarching theme of the movie is the idea that love transcends time and space. Before Cooper leaves, he promises his daughter Murph that he’d return in many years. Through the events of the story, he is unable to return. Still, with the help of some not-so-realistic science fiction, he communicates with her through secret messages, reinforcing his love for her and professing that he never intended to make her feel abandoned when he left. The story is very good and is only brought higher with the other aspects of this movie that make it so great.
The movie also has some of the best movie shots of all time. It’s a beautifully well-done movie with plenty of amazing visuals, even if many of them are CGI. The vastness of space constantly creates a feeling of emptiness in their journey and a sense of separation from the Earth. These stunning visuals help to subconsciously progress the story in one of the many expressions of the idea of “show don’t tell.”
The acting in the movie is also something done exceptionally well. Matthew McConaughey puts in a performance of a lifetime throughout the whole movie, and it gets to the point where you can’t see him and can only see the character with their pure emotion, which is the goal of many actors that very few can reach.
Last, but certainly not least, the soundtrack to the movie is incredible. The soundtrack is probably one of the most recognizable in recent cinema. With music by one of the greatest composers of all time, Hans Zimmer, you can’t go wrong. The only better movie composer I can think of is John Williams, and Hans Zimmer is not far behind. With famous works for Inception, Pirates of the Caribbean, and The Dark Knight, Hans Zimmer does not disappoint with Interstellar.
The only real problem I have with the movie is its scientific inaccuracies. The whole plot of the movie is based off of many accurate real life scientific theories and possibilities, but the one that bothers me is the “one hour on this planet is equivalent to 7 years on earth” thing. That just isn’t how it works at all. The principle of the actual science is that the greater the gravitational affect on an object, the slower time moves for that object relative to something else. The idea in the movie is that the gravity caused by the black hole that they are next to (which would probably kill them if it was accurate) is what causes time to dilate the way it is. The gravity necessary to dilate time to the extreme of one hour to 7 years would be enough to kill them instantaneously. Rant over, but it was still an amazing movie given everything in it. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should fix that as soon as possible.
Unfortunately, I also did not deeply read this blog post because I have been wanting to watch this movie for a while and didn’t want any spoilers, sorry! But I love how many images you use in your blog, I will definitely try to structure mine more like that because it breaks up the text nicely. You don’t use too many -ing words so I don’t have any grammatical changes.
Artifact: How the Shell logo is viewed in Nigeria
Thesis: Protesters are arguing for betterment of the injustices facing the community due to Shell’s overbearing influence on them represents their civic actions of calling for justice.
Point 1: The masks the protesters are wearing show how the Shell company has a strong takeover over the Nigerian people, as oil is their primary export.
Point 2: The noose symbolizes the execution of peaceful protesters in previous Shell related protests.
Point 3: The bright red colors and signs indicate that the Shell company has blood on their hands for mistreating the Nigerian people and for executing protesters.
Lens: visual
I learned how much symbolism can sometimes be used in what protesters decide to protest with. Just through the picture it is very telling what the noose and masks mean.
I have actually not watched this movie. But it’s definitely on my list now! Sometimes the best part of a movie is the soundtrack so to hear that that’s a big part of the movie is really nice. I love sci-fi movies because they seem so out there sometimes. This post was really good!
