The Big Question

Have you ever had an existential crisis-

constantly repeated the questions “Wait, who am I?” or “How am I?” in your head?

Then you’ve come to the right blog!

My goal is to help you find answers to life’s deepest scientific questions that correlate to aspects of religion.

It may seem scary or daunting to tackle these existential questions, but there is comfort in knowing that all of us humans have them, and that you are not alone.

This week I would like to start with the very beginning: creation- “Let there be light”, our cosmic origin, the Big Bang.

It is a hotly debated topic, simply because no one can really know what happened thirteen billion years ago.  Though, we are given many theories and conjectures through both science and religion.

It seems like there is a distinct line drawn between “religious” and” scientific” versions of creation. However, I would like to propose a theory that not only shows the connection between a religious and scientific take on creation, but where each take proves the other.

I am going to focus on the creation of mankind in particular. In upcoming weeks we will discuss the VERY beginning, but for right now, let’s skip ahead to the first signs of life.

We have been given both Genesis from the Christian Bible, and Darwin’s Theory of Evolution to explain the origins of mankind.

In Darwin’s On the Origin of Species (1859), he says

“…Natural selection acts only by taking advantage of slight successive variations; she can never take a great and sudden leap, but must advance by short and sure, though slow steps.” [1] “If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed, which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down.”

In other words, his theory is that humans came from single-celled organisms.

I propose that the book of Genesis in the Bible also establishes that humans came from single-celled organisms.

This is Darwin’s “tree of life”. This shows how Evolution occurred, and how it occurred in such a way to create humans. I’m going to be referencing this photo a lot, and will be zooming in on certain sections for different days of creation.

“Evolution” in the bible begins with “day three” and continues until “day six”:

DAY 3

11Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. 12The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

DAY 5

20And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” 21So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” 23And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.

DAY 6

24And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. 25God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

DAY 6 (cont’d)

26Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,a and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

Putting all of this together:

First plants were made, then fish, then birds, then mammals, then humans.

Darwin’s Theory of Evolution can be viewed as proving the biblical text of Genesis.

  1. This is pretty interesting, I wonder how the Christian story of creation compares to other stories of creation and how those compare to the theory of evolution.

  2. I absolutely loved your topic. As someone who is extremely into science, but also has a strong religious background I’m intrigued by your analysis. This is a concept that I’ve always grappled with, and tried to find common group, but seeing your insight was very eyeopening.

Your structure and content was amazing and I loved how you broke your ideas up. The fact that you had the specific excerpts from the Bible and the scientific diagrams. Overall, amazing post and I can’t wait to read more!

  3. Really fascinating. A lot of people think science and faith are mutually exclusive when they really compliment each other.

  4. I really like this idea of them being connected. I think it’s a side that not very many people have thought of. I also really like the way your structured your paragraphs and photos. Good job!!! I can’t wait to read your next post!

    1. This is missing a very important factor in the theory of evolution, and that is time. A species cannot be said to have “evolved” if it has not had the time to produce other generations.

      1. Are you referring to how in Genesis the word “day” is used? I think that the word day is a metaphor in Genesis. It serves to help people conceptualize that a “unit of time” has passed.
