Constructing a solid interfacial energy database and machine learning
This project will involve the literature search and collection of experimental and computational data on the surface and interface energies of solids, construction of a database, and machine learning about the data with regard to types of solid materials. Such a database will be extremely useful for predicting the materials microstructure evolution in solids and also in designing materials processing conditions such as choosing the substrates for thin film growth.
Construction of temperature strain domain phase diagram using a computer software
The internal microstructure of a thin film strongly depends on the temperature and the lattice mismatch between a thin film and the corresponding substrate. A phase-diagram of temperature versus strain will allow one to choose the type of substrate for a particular film to achieve desirable microstructures and thus properties. This project involves construction such a phase diagram using computer simulations based on a software package developed in our group.
