Phase Stability in Materials
Additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, has the potential to radically expand the design space for rapid manufacturing of metallic parts for a number of applications. In this project you will apply principles of thermodynamics and kinetics to the additive manufacturing of gradient alloys. Gradient alloys are metals in which the composition along one or more directions is varied continuously, e.g., a stainless steel to titanium gradient. Starting from a set of pre-fabricated gradient alloys and with the assistance of a mentor, you will devise and carry out an experimental and modeling research plan to further understanding of phase stability and microstructure-property relations in these materials.
