The Impossible Burger

What is the Impossible Burger, is it actually impossible to eat, is it made from Kim Impossible, all these questions and more will be answered in today’s blog about the impossible burger. In growing populations, there is becoming a larger sector of people who can afford the cost of meat. The problem with this is that the global environment cannot afford this constant rise of cattle and animals needed to feed the global economy of food. As it stands, CO2 production by all transportation around the world is the same amount of CO2 produced caused by livestock. Not only that but in some sections of the Amazon Rainforest is being burned down to create more land to raise cattle, which the fires from the trees are killing biodiversity, emitting more carbon, and the cattle living in the area that used to be the rainforest is now producing greenhouse gasses. To sum it up we need to start changing how we eat meat soon before it is too late.

Veggie burgers used to look like hockey pucks that had no taste similar to that of a real burger. The Impossible Burger has changed the game. This burger comes from basic plants that have the same texture and taste like a real burger. This taste is indistinguishably different, down to that bloody taste in your mouth. Turns out this bloody/meaty taste it is called Heme, and all living things make it, and this heme is made from soy plants. The amount of space, energy, and cost to make an impossible burger is substantially smaller than a beef patty. As it stands, production is increasing and as the impossible burger company, Impossible Foods expands they can make the burger meat cost a fraction of that of a beef patty. This plant-based burger has the same amount of calories, grams of protein as a real burger. The Impossible Foods company also makes other ‘meat’ products too. In order to control livestock rates, emissions and more, the Impossible Burger gives people a chance to try something plant-based with the main idea to cut down on the number of meat people eat.

Last year Burger King announced they will be making impossible burgers in their stores, and have found a huge fourth-quarter boost in sales, some of the greatest highs in their company history. People want to try it to be fooled, 70% of current impossible burger fans are meat-eaters. I encourage you to go out and try that plant meat, maybe make a switch or just try to cut down your meat intake for our environment.

  1. I really liked this blog post Noah. You made me want to try one of these impossible burgers. Veggie burgers usually have an “off” taste about them and cannot come close to comparing with real meat burgers, but since Burger King is selling them, they must be good. The meat industry does produce a lot of carbon, but it’s hard to give up meat because it has such a unique taste. It’s exciting to think about the future and what our diets might look like if we decide to cut down on meat.

  2. Wow, this is a really interesting take on an environmental issue! I had never thought of the environmental impact that a burger can have or how much livestock can add to our CO2 admission. The impossible burger seems even more appealing now seeing that it has benefits even outside of my own health. Next time I am near a Burger King I will have to try one out!
