Why did you decide to enter a technical career field?
I was always good at math in school. As I was looking into careers, my mom encouraged me to look into civil engineering as a career path. It sounded interesting so I pursued civil engineering in college.

What has been your career journey so far?
Mixed. Some days are great and others aren’t. Sadly, we still have a long way to go for gender equality in the workplace.

What does a typical day involve for you?
Reviews and Designs of track work. I look at the geometry of the track to allow the trains to run smoothly and safely with ever increasing demand.

What do you like most about your job?
I like that I can now do my job part time. After having a baby, working full time was difficult for me. I love that I can spend more quality time with my child!

What motivates you to put forward your greatest effort?
Having a boss that is a good mentor, one that I know supports me and collaborates with me to make decisions and works to help me achieve a greater life balance.

What would be your advice to young women entering the industry?
Be respectful to all people. Don’t fall into the “us versus them” trap. Know that there are great people out there who can and will help you in your career journey. Also know that there are people who will do the opposite. Sometimes it will be both from the same person, so, don’t trust anyone.

What are your interests/hobbies outside of work?
Mostly, playing with my child and dog. I enjoy nature walks, gardening and spending time with friends and family.

In your opinion, what is the recipe for success – for a team, career, or otherwise?
Teams must be balanced and operate with respect – that includes work and home life. Collaboration is so important because everyone has something that can add value to a group. Don’t take things personally. Micromanaging is counterproductive.
