In order to compose a team for the annual College Unions Poetry Slam Invitiational (CUPSI), WORDS must first search for Penn State’s finest slam poets via the The Penn State Slam Series!
Every Fall semester WORDS hosts four bi-weekly poetry slams in order to make our team selection. The first place winners of the first two slams get an automatic entry into the final round; while the other competitors will be given points according to their standing in the tournament. The points will be distributed as follows:
5th place – 1 point
4th place – 2 points
3rd place – 4 points
2nd place – 8 points
There is a total of 12 available spots for the final round: two spots will be filled by the first place winners of the first two slams; eight spots will be filled by the highest scoring Slam Series competitors; two spots will be given to the winners of the third, Last Chance, slam. The Last Chance slam has the same rules as the first two; however, competitors will compete for the last two remaining spots instead of points. This system is to make each slam unique and interesting!
Anyone can compete. Judges will be picked from the audience. Only one poem per round and no repeating will be allowed during the same slam. There is no advanced sign-up, competitors will have to sign up at the slam.
Be sure to get there early, we’ll see you there!
