Persuasive Essay and Advocacy Project: Education

So I’ll be perfectly honest with you all. I absolutely love the documentary “Waiting for Superman”, which is about the awful public schools and declining standards of the American education system. The film inspired me because education has been something very near and dear to my heart. I am extremely blessed to not only be able to go to college, but actually PICK the college I want to attend. That is very rare nowadays and for many kids the likelihood of them going to college could be 1/1000 (literally). In some cities, such as Washington D.C., the districts hold lotteries for charter schools that help the chosen children to be on a fast track toward higher education. But some individuals aren’t so lucky.

So I want to my persuasive essay to make people realize the tragic state of America’s failing public school systems and how the system is failing millions of kids each year.

Therefore, my advocacy project will either be encouraging people to sign the petition that the Take Part organization is creating to send to U.S. governors or encouraging people to contact their local school boards. I will probably do these by using a mailing list or social networks.

This is the link to the organization: http://www.takepart.com/waiting-for-superman/action

If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free!

  14. Great topic of choice. But rather than only persuading your audience to “make them realize the tragic state of the educational system” which I think a lot of people already know, you could push a little further. Maybe you could find a solution to this problem and persuade people why it would work. Good luck Kim, I know you’ll do great!

  15. I love this idea but I agree with Michelle, maybe try narrowing it down a bit more for both the essay and advocacy project, because people definitely know that education is not as good as it once was. Maybe focusing on a specific school subject that doesn’t have as much emphasis or funding as it used to would be a good idea.

I think many people know that our education system is failing, so you may want to look at persuading people into why we need to change that based upon the evidence of failing, instead of just the fact that we are failing.

  17. Have you seen this?

Yes, great topic. Be sure to know your audience for this essay.

As for the advocacy piece, think harder. What will contacting a school board achieve? What is the goal for the advocacy piece? Do you have a specific change you’d like to make? That could help you derive a more energetic project.

  18. May I suggest reading either Amazing Grace or Savage Inequalities, both by Jonathan Kozol? They are two excellent books about the educational system in the poorest places in America, like the Bronx and the South Side of Chicago. They could help your research in a fantastic topic!

  19. Yeah this is really good and I’m looking forward to seeing how it comes together. Heres a suggestion but maybe you should pick an area and focus in on that by yourself. You’re from Virginia so focusing on a bad district in Newport News or DC might be more beneficial. By doing this and the petition, I think you’ll get the most effective advocating.

  20. I am super excited to read this! Not only is it an awesome topic for a persuasive essay, it is a topic that I, honestly, don’t know too much about. I’ve gone to private schools since my mom enrolled me in preschool, so looking at the other side of things will be great! Be sure to put your final copy up on this blog!
