The WorkLink program is a fully integrated, on-campus, non-residential 2-year certificate program, in WorkLink Strategies and Employability, at Penn State University (University Park). The WorkLink program provides the opportunity for individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) to participate in postsecondary experiences and education alongside their peers.
The WorkLink program’s goal is to support students with ID in developing work and independent living skills. Students will take WorkLink seminars and will audit additional Penn State courses in literacy and math, and additional student-selected electives. The emphasis for the first year will be orienting to Penn state, promoting personal health and wellness, independent living skills, financial literacy, and engaging in person-centered planning to define their career goals and select electives from the general Penn State classes that will contribute to their preparation for employment. The second-year is dedicated to engaging in employment opportunities including job shadowing, refining work interests, learning about social skills in the workplace, and pursuing internships on campus or in the community.
WorkLink expands Penn State’s commitment to creating inclusive learning opportunities for people with disabilities, as evidenced through our collaboration with the State College Area School District’s (SCASD) LifeLink program. LifeLink, founded in 2002, provides SCASD special education students the opportunity to participate in Penn State classes and engage with Penn State Student volunteers in building social and independent living skills.
