Recently, it seems Ohio State simply can’t avoid being in the news. If you were living under a rock for the past month, you might have missed the scrutiny that the Ohio State football team is facing,
particularly their coaching staff. Surrounding the topic of sexual assault and abuse, this generation is completely different that it was 15 years ago, but is Urban Meyer stuck in the past?
About a month ago, Urban Meyer was facing tremendous heat from the media about his role in a sexual assault case that occurred in 2015 involving his offensive coordinator Zach Smith. About three years ago, Zach Smith supposedly hit his wife at the time with no punishment for his actions. Now divorced, ex-wife Courtney Smith has chosen to recently speak up to the media about what truly happened.
In a recent interview, Courtney Smith exposed pictures of the physical abuse that Zach Smith supposedly had done to her. She also proclaims that she told Shelley Meyer, Urban Meyer’s wife, about these accusations in attempt to reach out for help. On a phone call, Shelley told Courtney that she is going to have to tell Urban about what was going on through his football program. Although Shelley never confirms that she did tell Urban Meyer, many speculators see no reason why she wouldn’t have.
Assuming that Urban Meyer knows, which to some extent he had to have known what was going on in his football program, he went on to lie to the media about his complete unawareness and involvement in the situation. As a head coach, you truly do have full awareness about every situation going on in your program. Given the abuse occurred for over a year, the true odds of Urban Meyer actually unaware of this is almost zero.
Moving on from the scenario, all signs point to the fact that Urban Meyer’s priorities have simply not progressed when the world’s perspective on sexual assault has. Even when Urban Meyer coached at University of Florida, his mentality has always been to allow nothing to get in the way of winning football games. In fact, while he was at University of Florida, he assisted Aaron Hernandez cover up a murder case from a bar fight that he was involved in. Hernandez, being the football team’s star player, was never
even questioned by police. With this scenario, although he denies any knowledge of the situation, he once again sacrificed the safety of Courtney Smith in order to progress his football team and allow them to continue to win with no outside distractions.
Something that is even more interesting is that when Courtney Smith called Zach Smith’s parents when the abuse first began, his parents urged he not to call polic e for the sake of the Ohio State football program and for Zach Smith not to lose his job. In any other scenario, this would not be allowed at any level. What is your opinion on the entire Urban Meyer scandal?
