Refuting Buddhism and Daoism, Knowing True Confucianism: ZHANG Xingyao and Lidai tongjian jishi benmo buhoubian

Abstract: This article tried to explore the lives and family of ZHANG Xingyao, who was a Confucian Christian in early Qing dynasty, and the format, content, thoughts of his writing titled Li dai tongjian jishi benmo buhoubian (Supplements to the History of the Comprehensive Mirror Topically Arranged ) according to related research materials. Firstly the author briefly introduces the lives of Zhang, and makes supplements on his lineage, works and social works. Then it analyzes the edition and main ideas of Tianjiao mingbian (Clearly Distinguishing the Heavenly Teaching [from Heterodoxy]). Followed that researches the edition, contents, citation resources, and editor groups of Lidai tongjian jishi benmo buhoubian. In the conclusion the author points out that Zhang’s refuting Buddhism and Taoism as an orthodox Confucian actually supplies a reason for his conversion to the foreign religion Catholicism.
