Open Discussion session: Opportunities for Archives & Special Collections in a Renovated Hillman Library

Ed Galloway and Matt Francis

Ed Galloway was recently appointed Interim Assistant University Librarian for Archives & Special Collections within the University Library System at the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to that he has been the head of the Archives Service Center since 2008. He is responsible for the overall administration of the personnel, collections, services, and activities of Archives & Special Collections at Pitt, including developing, maintaining and implementing policies, procedures, rules and regulations regarding all archival and records management activities, arrangement and description, reference services, and reformatting via digitization. Prior to that he was the coordinator of the ULS Digital Research Library from 2000-2008, where he planned and managed digitization activities within the library.

Pitt’s main library is undergoing a major renovation in the next few years and archives and special collections have an unprecedented opportunity to rethink our services, space, outreach, EVERYTHING in the new space we will occupy. We would love to learn from this symposium community about BIG ideas and what we COULD and SHOULD be doing in this space, especially as it pertains to technology.
