Class III myosins localize to the tips of stereocilia, the actin-based protrusions of the inner ear that are critical for hearing. Interestingly, mutations in the class III myosin, MYO3A, have been implicated in hearing loss. In Dr. Christopher Yengo’s Lab, 4th year biomedical sciences PhD student Joseph Cirilo uses a cell-based model and fluorescent microscopy to investigate how these myosins localize to protrusions and control their length, with emphasis on understanding how hearing loss mutations alter class III myosin cellular function. |
