My name is Zack Furness and I am Associate Professor of Communications at Penn State University’s Greater Allegheny campus, where I also serve as the Communications Program Coordinator and the WMKP Radio General Manager. I’m the author of One Less Car: Bicycling and the Politics of Automobility (Temple University Press, 2010), editor of Punkademics (Minor Compositions & Autonomedia, 2012), co-editor of The NFL: Critical and Cultural Perspectives (Temple University Press, 2014), and I have written for a number of books, journals, political rags, websites and magazines including Punk Planet, Bitch Magazine, and Souciant. I was also a longtime editor and contributor to Bad Subjects, one of the pioneering publications on the Internet.
My work as a researcher, teacher and activist all draw upon a web of influences that include cultural studies, cultural geography, feminist media studies, anarchism, environmentalism, critical pedagogy, history and philosophy of technology, and punk rock. I’ve also performed in punk bands and other musical projects since 1997, most recently in Barons, and my current projects are all related to music in some way. During the 2018-2019 academic year, I am conducting that research as a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Music at the University of Pittsburgh.
