Getting Comfy with Comfey

The newest Pokemon region of Alola takes place as one may be able to guess, on islands that heavily resemble Hawaii. This means that for new Pokemon they have a plethora of flora and fauna they could base them on.

There are beautiful fruits, sea turtles, geckos, and thousands of other species of creatures evolved to deal with a miniscule amount of land.

So naturally Gamefreak created a Pokemon that truly represents this lush biodiversity with Comfey.

If you look at it quickly, it’s easy to not understand what it is. Is the head a fruit? Why are the flowers all different colors?

It’s a lei. This Pokemon, is actually a necklace made of flowers.

And it’s an absolute beast. Allow me to explain.

Looking at its stats, it’s easy to understand why it’s in NU. It’s base 100 speed is okay, and with a base 110 special defense, you could even argue that’s pretty fast for a specially defensive wall. Special attack is middling, as is its physical defense, with truly atrocious HP and attack.

So what role does it fill? It’s attacking stats are low, and defensively it’s not much better. It’s movepool is decent as a cleric, the role that it fills in the anime, by Nurse Joy’s side.

It has Aromatherapy, Leech Seed, and Synthesis, all great for longevity and helping teammates deal with status. It also has Defog, Taunt, Trick Room, Tailwind, Toxic, and U-turn, all great support moves.

It’s three abilities all seem to help it work as a support ‘mon too. Flower Veil prevents its grass type allies from having their stats lowered in doubles. Natural Cure heals it from status whenever it switches out (preventing it from being crippled by toxic or paralysis), and Triage is a unique ability that gives healing moves plus three priority.

Triage is an interesting ability to give Comfey because it only knows five healing moves: Rest, Floral Healing, Synthesis, Giga Drain, and Draining Kiss.

Yet when you give Comfey Triage, it eats a poorly prepared team for breakfast.

If those last two listed moves rang alarm bells in your head, then you’re thinking along the right lines. Giga Drain and Draining Kiss are unique in Comfey’s healing moves in that they damage the opponent. That means that despite their low base power, they nearly always go first (even before Fake Out) and they heal whatever damage Comfey has taken.

Comfey also gets Calm Mind, meaning its most effective set is max health, max special attack with modest, it eats whatever moves you throw at it with its decent natural bulk while it calm minds up, and then it heals itself as it consumes your entire team.

Starting on turn 15, you see Comfey doing what it was born to do. Not merely to rest upon itself, its own laurels, but to destroy entire teams, and just sit there, immovable and powerful. While it looks as though it should be supporting someone else, and it can fill that role, this lei was made to be worn in the starring role.

Hope you enjoy using Comfey as much as I am!

Thanks and as always, have a good time!
