Hello everyone! Welcome to another video game review! With this review, I’ll be going over Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (AC:Odyssey). This is an adventure/RPG game that places you in ancient Greece as a mercenary trying to uncover hidden secrets. This game is actually the eleventh installation within the Assassin’s Creed series, so certain things can be confusing if you have no other experience with the franchise.
Now let’s get started by talking about the platforms and pricing! Luckily, this game has a good range of support and can be played on the following systems-
- Xbox One
- PS4
- PC
- Nintendo Switch
- Google Stadia
- PS5*
- Xbox Series S|X*
When it comes to pricing, this game isn’t so bad. Due to the fact that this game is over 3 years old (released September 30, 2018) and the sequel to this game came out recently, the price has dipped. Although different retailers sell for different prices, you can get this game fairly easily for less than $20.
Starting with something that I found to be very pleasant about this game, would be the graphics! I’m a sucker for pretty screens and AC: Odyssey delivers. This game supports a good amount of visual settings including things like 4k and HDR support. If this game was about walking around and enjoying the world that Ubisoft (the game’s producers) created, I would get it. From the way that the light shines over mountains to the grass fluttering in natural ways, everything looks great.
Now I’ll touch on the world of AC:Odyssey. This game is HUGE. I say this in terms of both content and actual size. I’ve played for around 100 hours and still have a great deal of content that I haven’t touched (This is still excluding the dlc). According to Gamerant the size of this game’s playable area is an astounding 90.7 square miles. What’s more impressive in my opinion, is the fact that in almost all of that space, there is something fun to do. With things like naval battles, saving people from weird cults, helping random npcs by doing small tasks, and even fighting mythical creatures, there is certainly a good time to be had with this game.
Moving to combat and armor mechanics. Overall, I feel that the combat in this game is simple enough to understand while still being challenging enough to feel that you’re not breezing through the game. It’s a fairly basic system, you have your light + heavy attack, block, dodge, etc. This game as I mentioned earlier takes a bit more of an RPGish approach to some things. Firstly, there are different abilities that you can get as you level up your character such as the ability to create a blinding flash of light to escape enemies, the ability to become invisible, etc. I think that this was a really interesting addition to the game (previous AC titles don’t have this mechanic), it provides players with a great deal of ways to approach situations. In addition to this, there is armor in the game that also has stats and abilities (that boost your defense, speed, increase health, etc.). If you get this game, a good one to look for would be the “Immortal” set. This armor is pretty good, once you die, you are instantly revived and can keep on fighting. This comes in handy (especially when playing on harder difficulties).
AC: Odyssey is getting a 10/10 from me. This game is in my opinion (which many others disagree with) a masterpiece and tons of fun! I strongly encourage giving it a try. If you have any questions about the game, or comments on what I should review next, leave a comment! Have a great day everyone!
Hi Zion, thanks for sharing your post! I am not the biggest video gamer so I don’t know much about different games, but I am finding your posts to be interesting! I had no idea that video games had advanced so much with graphics and the size of playable material. It seems like another form of art, designing such a complex world and coming up with all of the different moving parts. I am looking forward to reading more from you!
As someone who doesn’t have that much knowledge or experience in terms of video games, I found this to be a super interesting read! I didn’t realize there were 10 other installations of the game. I also think that $20 for a video game is pretty inexpensive (relative to what I normally hear of video game prices). Based on the photo in your post, the graphics also look super impressive! I think it’s safe to assume that this is by far the best iteration of the game so far. Can’t wait for next weeks post!
Hi Zion. I found this to be really interesting particularly the part about the playable area. I had never considered this aspect of video games. I also think the theme/ setting of the game definitely makes it intriguing to play. The graphics also look really great. Can’t wait to read on !
