I found a nutrition education poster in an online nutrition store which I found really interesting because it is addressed to all types of population. The poster title is “Being healthy is as simple as A B C” , it uses attractive colors as red, yellow, green and red in order to get the attention of the people, specially little kids. It also uses a lot of graphic techniques such as a soccer ball with feet, salads and a circle crossing a sugary beverage.
The objective of the poster is to explain how easy is to be healthy by following three tips to encourage a healthy lifestyle. The “A” in the title stands for “Always Active” which include information about how to maintain an active life by playing a sport, working around the house, not sitting and play video games but play or walk outside the house. These are easy tips that every person can follow; it teaches kids that being active is always fun and teaches parents that it is not expensive and it is actually easy to provide information about how to be healthy and offer a better lifestyle to their children.
The B stands for “Beverage Better” and this category is more focus in teaching kids about how to choose the best option among the beverages. It teaches that drinking water is really important and that is the best option among the other drinks; it also gives examples of sugary drinks which we should not drink such as soda, sports drinks and punch. This category is one of the most important because children in the United States are used to drink tall sodas as they are really cheap, regarding that most of the population do not know the risk and consequences of drinking sugary drinks.
Finally, the “C” stands for “Choose Calorie-Wise” which is aim to teach how to choose the best food between the menus. As it is address to children, it does not teach how to calculate intake of calories or to count calories in each food; on the other hand, it gives five tips about food choices that are easy to understand, follow and they are not limited to specific foods:
- Cut back in fat and sugar
- Make your grains whole
- Eat more fruits and vegetables
- Choose lean protein
- Pour skim milk
What I found most interesting in this poster is that it gives really good tips, easy to follow and address to all populations. I also like the fact that it uses a lot of graphic techniques in order to get attention of children and that is the best way they can learn about healthy lifestyles. As nutrition educator I would use this poster in my office, also I would recommend the local government to post them outside elementary, medium and high schools as it is an easy reading, also at the gyms and hospitals.
