Tanner had an interesting lecture in your absence. He spoke about how music and culture are connected, and how it seems like culture is for sale. Tanner spoke about how music has become political and no matter how it seems, every song has its own message. Even a song like Miley Cyrus’s “Wrecking Ball” has a meaning. On the surface it its just a catchy pop song, however when more closely examined her message can be taken as promoting women’s rights and control of their own bodies.
One of his main points was that all music has a political purpose. One of the artist examples he used was Jay Z. He spoke about how people think Jay Z has become less black since he has become so rich. When Jay first started he was from the streets of Brooklyn and could easily related, but as time has gone on his music has changed meanings as his political views have shifted. One of the reasons is that he has been wealthy for so long that it must be hard to still relate to the streets.
While he spoke about how every song is political it is also important to remember that no one today makes music exclusively for the art. The other reason people make music is for money obviously. This is important to remember because it may affect the type of music an artist makes because they may want to change the content to make it more mainstream. While all of these things have happened to the music business it is still important remember that it is still at its base art. Most artist make music they want to and hope their fans continue to enjoy.
