“Where Do You Even Find This Stuff?”

Well, we’ve come to the last week of blogging. It’s been real, sometimes its been fun, and I hope I’ve gotten at least a few of you to broaden your horizons and listen to some new bands. For my last post, I would like to answer a question that inevitably gets tossed around when I start talking about Modern Baseball and MF DOOM, “Where do you even find this stuff?” I hope that you guys might think of me at some future date and look at these sites/blogs and maybe get a sense of what I’ll probably be listening to at the time.

We’ll start with the classic, Pitchfork. Pitchfork is a music website most known as it was the place hipsters would go to to find their music. Now, with the rise of the internet and independent music becoming more and more popular, Pitchfork has increased in popularity while staying true to its roots. it always has good, up to date articles. Furthermore, the interviews that Pitchfork has with artists are really great. But, like most music sites, it also is really good at linking to other sites and videos, and that really lets you broaden your horizons. The reviews on this site are also pretty good, but more on reviews later.

While Pitchfork is great for indie music, as well as a smattering of hip hop, there’s only one site that really reigns supreme on the punk/emo/hardcore scene: Property of Zack. PoZ is run by Zack Zarillo, a notable name in the Philly punk scene. His blog, like Pitchfork, commonly deals with the aggregation of music news that other sites report, as well as a little editorial on top of it. Furthermore, the reviews on PoZ are a little better than Pitchfork’s, as they mostly deal with bands that have a smaller influence, and more can be said about the music (Pitchfork talks a lot about context. Sometimes you just don’t care.). A definite bonus of this website comes from the titular Zack’s involvement in the Philly punk scene: premieres. So many new bands can be found just by looking through the premiered tracks and new bands on that site. I found bands like Three Man Cannon and Pentimento that way. Furthermore, he’s really good friends with all of the members of Modern Baseball, as well as runs Bad Timing Records, a great label. Great site.

Now, I keep putting off talking about the reviews of many of these sites, and that’s because one man reigns supreme, Anthony Fantano, The Internet’s Busiest Music Nerd. TheNeedleDrop is a great YouTube channel where he reviews music of all sorts in a well-informed, compelling way. Slimthony Jimtano has a really great rapport with his fans, and he uses a fake character of his roommate, Cal Chuchesta, to sort of respond to them. Badthony Joketano’s videos are really well thought out and he really understands the artistic process in a way that makes him know what he’s talking about. I’ve fallen into a habit of habitually watching Twothony Stackstano’s videos when I’m bored, and I’ve gotten into a lot more hip hop and experimental music than I would have. Also, he’s considered the king of 4chan’s /mu/ board, so you know he’s good.

Other than that, there’s a lot of sources for my music. Recommendations from other people with similar taste are always nice. I make sure to follow members of bands I like on Twitter/Facebook/Instagram because they’re always plugging other bands (that’s how I found Modern Baseball) and other than that, you just sort of find stuff. You have to be in the right mind though. Go subscribe to some cool subreddits, find what you like, and never stop listening.

Jake Foose out.
