People wrapped in plastic wrap

When looking for controversial advertisements, I came across tons from PETA, who are against animal cruelty. Some of these advertisements were really offensive and a lot of them were also very provocative. The one I stumbled across was a picture of a human in one of those Styrofoam trays covered in plastic wrap. This image is very gruesome, but it definitely gets PETA’s message across. Not only was there an advertisement depicting this incident, but they also did a protest in the middle of Times Square. Members of PETA laid half naked, covered in fake blood, in those Styrofoam pans, covered in plastic wrap to demonstrate their disapproval of people eating meat. There were also other members of PETA that were walking around with signs saying “meat is murder.” I think it is interesting to look at how against eating meat they are, but they will have people lay there in scorching hot temperatures just to get their message across. Also, at their events or protests, they hand out DVDs narrated by Paul McCartney that depicts real slaughterhouse footage. These events have happened in many other places such as: Houston, Texas; Cincinnati, Ohio; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Springfield, Illinois; Vernon, California; and San Francisco, California. This advertisement is very persuasive and it really makes you think twice about eating meat. PETA has a great ethos because their name is known worldwide. Within this advertisement, they use pathos to try and pull you to be emotionally upset when viewing this depiction. By using this as their pathos, they try to make the logical connection that killing animals is like eating another human. This argument, while very persuasive, does not connect completely. They are trying to say that animals are equivalent to humans, when in reality, they are not.  I agree that animals should be treated humanly, I don’t think that not eating meat is the right solution for every person.

Wow, this is really horrible. I agree with Mike that despite the shock of this protest against meat, it is not going to make me stop eating meat. There is a huge difference between eating cows and eating people, and I find it amazing what lengths people will go to to villainize meat-eating.

My first reaction to this was horrifying. I believe they have to get their point across but this is gruesome. This makes me want to throw up but this does not make me want to not eat meat. I am still going to eat meat. This just made me realize how objective they are and also made me realize that I am never joining PETA.

I did not know PETA had done this. I agree with you that the connection is not fully made. I cannot imagine walking through Times Square and coming across this. I can’t imagine that this provocative act by PETA stopped many people from eating meat.
