Flower Arrangements

Ever since I was a little girl I always admired how beautiful and intricate my mother’s flower arrangements were, as well as how much time and effort she dedicated in the summer to planting and maintaining her flowers and plants. One of my favorite things she would do is collect some of the flowers she planted outside and make beautiful, little, arrangements and surprise me with them by placing them in my room. Once when I decided to make arrangements of fake flowers as decorations for my dorm room I realized how tricky it was to make them look nice. Upon asking my mother for help I also decided to research some tips and tricks myself.

The first task of making an arrangement is having a proper vase. You don’t want bulkier flowers in a small vase or vice versa.  Also, you have to make sure you cut the stems accordingly so that they fit. Unless if it’s a clear vase or a certain look you’re going for, you don’t want to see a significant amount of the stems. Aside from aesthetics, cutting a little off the bottom of the stems help the flower absorb water and stay fresh longer. If you’re using fresh flowers and not fake ones, make sure you change the water regularly. If you are using fake flowers use a special green foam to keep the stems in place.

As far as flower placement goes, start with the largest flowers first and then fill in with smaller flowers and other foliage such as leaves or berries. There should be a balance of light and dark colors as well as different types of flowers. Nice arrangements have a balance of different colors, textures, and lengths.

The flower to vase ratio should be about 3/2. This is easier to achieve with fake flowers where you can use the form to achieve specific lengths. There shouldn’t be any leaves in the water, however including leaves throughout the arrangement and draping over the vase can create a nice look. After learning the basics you can get more creative. A vase can be many different things, basically any container that can hold water. Some people like using mason jars, or different items around the house. You can match the arrangement to a certain room or use it to brighten up a room. Flower arrangements can be fun to make and enjoy, I think a room can become much more cozier and interesting with a beautiful arrangement.
