ASHRAE Presidents Scholarship Criteria
Scholarships are awarded to full-time students enrolled in an undergraduate Bachelor of Science engineering curriculum, which has traditionally been a preparatory curriculum for the profession of HVAC or refrigeration, must have completed a minimum of 45 semester credit hours or equivalent, and must have TWO years of study remaining before graduation.
Applicants must be a current ASHRAE student Member, have a cumulative college Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a scale where 4.0 is the highest, and the university the student attends must meet the following criteria:
- The institution hosts an active ASHRAE Student Branch or the degree program must be accredited by an agency recognized by ASHRAE as listed in 3.8 of the Society Scholarship Program Guidelines.
- The program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) www.abet.org or the institution is accredited by an equivalent agency outside the USA that is a signatory of the Washington Accord or the institution has a signed Memorandum of Understanding with ABET.
To be eligible for scholarship renewal for a second year, the scholarship recipient must:
- Have maintained at least a 3.0 cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) on a maximum 4.0 scale while enrolled full time, and
Have at least one full year of study remaining before graduation, and
Have obtained summer employment (10 week minimum) or an internship with an employer in the HVAC&R industry after their first scholarship year.
Engineering Technology Scholarships
Five one-year scholarships available to full-time undergraduate Engineering Technology students pursuing either a bachelor or an associate degree in a course of study that has traditionally been a preparatory curriculum for the HVAC&R profession. Qualified applicants must have a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a scale where 4.0 is the highest and/or a class standing of no less than the top 30% and meet at least one of the following criteria:
- the institution has an active ASHRAE student branch on campus ASHRAE Student Branches
- the program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) www.abet.org or the Partnership for Air Conditioning, Heating, & Refrigeration Accreditation (PAHRA) www.pahrahvacr.org or
- an agency outside the USA that is a signatory of The Sydney Accord

- Gordon V. R. Holness Engineering Technology Scholarship (1) – $10,000
Scholarship was established by Presidential Member, Gordon Holness, who served 2009-2010
- Lynn G. Bellenger Engineering Technology Scholarship available exclusively to women (1) – $5,000
Scholarship was established in memory of ASHRAE’s first woman president who served 2010-2011. Available to a qualified female undergraduate engineering technology student.
- Engineering Technology Scholarships (3) – $5,000 each
Undergraduate Engineering Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate engineering or pre-engineering students who are enrolled full-time in a post-secondary educational institution and pursuing a Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree in a course of study that traditionally has been a preparatory curriculum for the HVAC&R profession. Applicants must have a cumulative college Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a scale where 4.0 is the highest and/or a class standing of no less than the top 30% and meet at least one of the following criteria:
- the institution hosts an active ASHRAE Student Branch or
- the program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) www.abet.org or
- the institution is accredited by an equivalent agency outside the USA that is a signatory of the Washington Accord or
- the institution has a signed Memorandum of Understanding with ABET

$10,000 Scholarships
- Willis H. Carrier Scholarships
(2) one-year $10,000 undergraduate engineering scholarships available annually. Scholarship was established by The Carrier Corporation in memory of its founder, who’s known widely for his numerous and significant contributions to establishing air conditioning as an industry. Carrier installed the world’s first scientifically designed air conditioning system in 1902. - Gordon V. R. Holness Scholarship
One-year scholarship established by and named for a former ASHRAE President (2009-2010). Presidential Theme: Sustaining Our Future by Rebuilding Our Past - Reuben Trane Scholarships
(3) two-year $10,000 undergraduate engineering scholarships awarded $5,000 per year over two years. Scholarship was established in memory of The Trane Company founder, an engineer, inventor & business executive, whose manufacturing enterprise ranks today as one of the world’s largest in the HVAC&R industry.
$5,000 One-Year Scholarships
- Lynn G. Bellenger Scholarship available exclusively to women. Scholarship is named in memory of ASHRAE’s first woman president (2010-2011). Presidential Theme: Modeling a Sustainable World
- Frank M. Coda Scholarship established in memory of ASHRAE’s former Executive Vice President, who served the Society from 1981-2004.
- Charles E. Henck Scholarship established by Charles E. Henck, a Fellow Life Member of ASHRAE. Special consideration shall be given to a student attending a school within the geographical area of ASHRAE Region III (Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington DC). The selected candidate may have an opportunity for an internship.
- Duane Hanson Scholarship named after the president of Gayner Engineers, a consulting mechanical/electrical engineering firm in San Francisco, California.
- Prem Jain Memorial Scholarship. Special consideration shall be given to full-time undergraduate engineering students enrolled in a program accredited by a signatory of the Washington Accord in Asia or South Africa. The scholarship was established by and named for an ASHRAE Life Member and founder of the ASHRAE India Chapter.
- Alwin B. Newton Memorial Scholarship named for an industry pioneer, who was granted 219 patents during his lifetime.
- William P. Chapman Scholarship – One-year scholarship established by and named for a former ASHRAE President (1976-1977).
- ASHRAE General Scholarship – (2) one-year $5,000 undergraduate engineering scholarships available annually
- ASHRAE Legacy Scholarship
$3,000 One-Year Scholarships
- Henry Adams Scholarship
Scholarship was established by Henry Adams, Inc, a consulting firm based in Baltimore, Maryland, in memory of its founder, a charter member and sixth president of ASHRAE’s predecessor society, ASHVE, in 1899
University Scholarships
Scholarships are available to full-time undergraduate engineering or pre-engineering students enrolled in a specific post-secondary educational institution and pursuing a Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree in a course of study that has traditionally been a preparatory curriculum for the HVAC&R profession. Applicants must have a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a scale where 4.0 is the highest and/or a class standing of no less than the top 30%.
David C. J. Peters Scholarship – $5,000
A one-year scholarship available annually to a qualified undergraduate mechanical or architectural engineering student enrolled full-time in a four or five year bachelor degree program at one of the institutions listed below. The scholarship was created by Southland Industries in honor of David Peters, a tireless advocate of recruiting quality and an ASHRAE member.
Regional Scholarships
ASHRAE Region I Setty Family Foundation Scholarship – $3,000
A one-year scholarship available annually to a qualified undergraduate mechanical or architectural engineering student attending a post-secondary educational institution within the geographic boundaries of ASHRAE Region I or who has graduated from a high school within Region I (Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Maine, & New Hampshire) and meets the general criteria.
ASHRAE Region III Setty Family Foundation Scholarship – $3,000
A one-year scholarship available annually to a qualified undergraduate pre-engineering or engineering student attending a post-secondary educational institution within the geographic boundaries of ASHRAE Region III (Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington D.C.) and meets the general criteria.
Instructions and Application
Applications and the following documents must be submitted on or before the application deadline to be considered:
- Official transcript of grades. Transcript must either be mailed, sent through an online electronic transfer service, or directly from your registrar’s office on your behalf. Photocopies will not be accepted.
- Three signed letters of recommendation as follows: one from an instructor or faculty advisor, a current or past employer, and another character reference (other than a family member). In cases where the institution has an ASHRAE student branch on campus, a letter from the faculty advisor of that branch may be one of the three letters of recommendation.
