Although most people have heard of the country and memorized it when learning the continents, many know little information regarding the flourishing, rich country. BBC released an article in the beginning of the year that outlined what most of the world gets wrong about Australia. The article claims that most of our thoughts don’t go past stereotypes and cliches, but the author was determined to set some things straight.
Soap operas have contributed to some of the stereotypes formed about the country, due to their popularity in Australia. They also have contributed to some controversy, failing to represent the various demographics that are collaborating in Australia.
The “Land Down Under” is commonly used to refer to Australia, but doesn’t give the country a very good representation. “It first appeared in the 1880s when Britain was the geographic point of reference, and thus seems redundant at the beginning of the Asian century, when Australia looks increasingly to Washington and Beijing.”
What most people do not know about Australia is its dominance of sports. Sports are extremely competitive and popular in the country, attracting fans nationwide.
One of the last misinterpretations that article addresses, is Australia’s reputation as being heavy drinkers. The article claims that the country does have a problem with binge drinking, ranking 44th on the international alcohol consumption ladder, but its placement is relatively low compared to other countries like Great Britain which ranks 17th.
