The objective of this project is to aid Larson Texts in extending their user base to teaching a targeted age group of around 13-18 year old individuals about personal financial techniques. This project aims to do so through a slightly gamified application that allows for better user retention.

Project Summary

Overview

Our sponsor is a textbook company focusing largely on mathematics. Wanting to branch out into finance, they wanted a gamified and accessible website where users aged 13-18 can learn finance. This requires an understanding on what learning systems can keep the target audience engaged, how to design for mobile, and keeping the system compliant with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

Objectives

  • Create a mobile friendly web application teaching finance.
  • Implement competitive and rewarding systems to keep the users engaged.
  • Adhere to WCAG 2.1 AA standards to keep the system accessible to all types of users.

Approach

  • The team looked at other applications that are similar but teach different topics like Duolingo.
  • The team created multiple wireframes to bring to the sponsor to further develop and decide on the final design.
  • The final wireframe design used the best parts from the initial designs.
  • The team split into two groups, frontend, and backend, and began developing the application.
  • The frontend group worked on building out the user interface, and logic to call the required APIs.
  • The backend group worked on designing and developing the API calls for the database. Both groups communicated with one another to constantly update and make any necessary changes.

Outcomes

  • This project creates a prototype for Larson Text to continue developing a new financial wellness application.
  • This project offers Larson Text a new avenue to expand their customer base.
