Matewan Screening

On Thursday night September 19th I attended a screening of the film called Matewan. Matewan was directed by John Sayels and was released in 1987. The screening took place in the Carnegie building and was from 8-10:30. The film was a docudrama about the coal miners strike and the famous battle of Matewan. A docudrama is a informational film, much like a documentary, that uses modern cinema techniques and dramatic acting to retell the story. Movies such as Saving Private Ryan, Cinderella Man, and the Social Network are considered docudramas. Overall the film was worth seeing and a good way to spend a Thursday night. Being a film major, I am always interested in seeing new movies, especially if I am not as familiar with the genre of the film.

Penn State vs. Kent State

In Penn State’s most recent game on September 21st, the defeated Kent State 34 – 0, the first shut out for Penn State since September 28, 2010, which also happened to be against Kent State. It rained during the entire game and poured for the whole first quarter, which effected gameplay tremendously. The opening kick-off to Penn State was muffed but luckily recovered. Quarterback Christian Hackenberg had another famous “backwards throw” maybe due to the rain, but maybe not. Overall Hackenberg had a pretty disappointing game, despite the win, he was only 13 for 35 with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. This was the first game of the season Hackenberg didn’t connect with Robinson for at least 1 touchdown. Each game Penn State continues to improve both on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. This week I also had the chance to edit my first highlight/pump up video for the team. Each week the strength and conditioning coach, Fitz as everyone calls him, has the video team create a pump up video with some sort of theme to kick off the week of lifting. Since I am the newest member, I haven’t really helped out much on the editing and production side of things yet. But this week the video was all on me and I am happy to say that the video was turned in and given the thumbs up. I am excited to continue to create videos for the team and add to my own personal portfolio.

Penn State vs. UCF

Penn State’s third game of the season was an offensive battle and the students first white out. Both teams have great playmakers on the offensive side of the ball and these stars got to battle it out on 9/14. Even though Penn State lost, it was a great game to watch and never got dull throughout the entire game. Before the game, another film crew student went out and interviewed and filmed fans tailgating. It is impossible not to enjoy yourself at the tailgates. Each game is a whole new experience and is always exciting. I couldn’t be more excited for the next years to come as an employee of Penn State Football.

Penn State vs. Eastern Michigan

The first home game of Penn State’s 2013 season was against Eastern Michigan. This was my first home game as a videographer for the team. Before this season I had only been to 2 Penn State football home games despite me living here all my life. I was excited to be behind the scenes of the whole operation and witness my first home game as a student and an employee. During the first quarter I was helping on the field and got to experience just how loud this stadium can be from the sidelines. There’s no more exciting feeling than hearing 100,000 fans roar with excitement after Penn State scores a touchdown. I’m looking forward to all of the rest of the home games already.
