Yassmin – Abdel-Magied winning the Australian of the Year Award in 2015

Yassmin Abdel-Magied: What does my headscarf mean to you?

Unconcious biased or implicit prejudice is the focus of Yassmin Abdel-Magied’s Ted Talk. Unconscious Bias is not the same as conscious discrimination, there’s not a sexist or racist trying to get out. She goes on to say, “it’s not something I’m  not accusing you of.” but she also says, “It’s something that is different than our societal norms and we can’t get away from that.” To put all this into perspective, a study was done in the space of unconscious bias in the base of gender. The experiment was done by the Boston symphony orchestra to see if the musicians that actually played better were male. “Weirdly enough” the women were the ones who played statistically better than men. The Ted Talk goes on to discuss her personal life and how she has shattered the norms being a black, Australian. hijab, wearing women in the modern day. We all have a conscious bias but this video explains how we could suppress maybe even ignore our first thoughts of new things we see everyday.
