Center Stage held a contest across the Penn State Health clinics for the ownership and installation of new artwork. A Handful of Earth is a series of collage art based on flora and fauna throughout the seasons, day and night, in the home garden of artist Wynn Yarrow.
The Women and Babies unit wrote in their winning entry: “Our parents of newborns would find inspiration in seeing art representing the life that exists in both day and night settings in all seasons. Additionally, those who experience the misfortune of loss may find comfort in seeing art that conveys that there is beauty, even in the dark, and reminds them that there is light following every moment of darkness.” The artwork can be viewed in the Women and Babies area of the 7th Floor of the Children’s Hospital.
As the field of arts in health grows and professionalizes across the country, Center Stage offers training to welcome and prepare artists to work in hospitals. Thanks to a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, we have developed an online, asynchronous, free course through the Penn State Health System. In the past year, 14 Pennsylvania artists earned Certificates of Completion.
