Spotlight on Center Stage Musician and Artist Jonathan Frazier
Jonathan Frazier shares his talents with Center Stage in a variety of ways. As a landscape painter, he has exhibited art work at the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Two of his pieces are part of the hospital’s permanent collection. He also paints plein air style at Cancer Center events in an effort to enable a pleasant diversion for patients undergoing treatment. Jonathan is also a gifted musician and became aware of Center Stage musical offerings.
After a piano audition, he began performing at the hospital showcasing more than the keyboard. He has added diversity and dimension to Center Stage performances by introducing his Native American flutes, triple flute, Chinese hulusi, melodica, mini glockenspiel, and occasionally an electric bulbul tarang from India. Sometimes folks want to know about his unusual instruments, and he’s always happy to share his knowledge.
Jonathan says, “I play a wide variety of venues, and the Center Stage gigs tend to be more relaxed and low key – the music is at times more atmospheric, though I always try to keep it interesting. I watch people around me, and adapt my style to the room. For example, if a child comes by, I may play ‘Linus and Lucy’ from Charlie Brown.”
Jonathan has received praise from patients who were able to hear him perform. One patient says, “Excellent! Phenomenal! Relaxing and calming – especially when I needed it! Very gifted and personable performer!” Another patient says, “Great! This is a wonderful thing. It takes away the sickness feeling.”
Jonathan also has a background in the medical field. He says, “Having previously served in the Air Force as a medical lab tech, I find that playing in the Medical Center merges my interests in medicine and music.”
Center Stage Director Claire de Boer says, “Jonathan’s engaging music and personal warmth offer a pleasant surprise at a hospital visit.”
