University of Virginia Carter G. Woodson Institute Pre-Doctoral Residential Research Fellowship

The Carter G. Woodson Institute’s distinguished fellowship is a two-year residential fellowship for pre-doctoral students whose work focuses on Africa and/or the African Diaspora. Scholars selected for the fellowship will relocate to the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia to join a cohort of interdisciplinary scholars. Fellows receive funding for two years. This includes an annual stipend of $24,000, plus health insurance.

Eligibility:

The Woodson Institute fellowship is open to qualified candidates without restriction as to citizenship or current residence.

The pre-doctoral fellows must be in residence at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia for the duration of the award period. Fellows are expected to participate in the series of workshops held during the academic year and to present their work periodically to the larger academic community.

Fellows may accept no employment, fellowships, or consulting obligations during the Woodson fellowship period without the approval of the Director.

Editing Press: Laura Bassi Scholarship

The Editing Press is a small company of published academics from Oxford and Cambridge Universities who provide editing, proofreading, and translation services of the highest standard to postgraduates and fellow academics. The Laura Bassi Scholarship was established by Editing Press in 2018 with the aim of providing editorial assistance to postgraduates and junior academics whose research focuses on neglected topics of study, broadly construed, within their disciplines. The scholarships are open to every discipline and are awarded twice a year: December and April.

Eligibility: All currently enrolled master’s and doctoral candidates are eligible to apply, as are academics in the first five years of their employment. There are no institutional, departmental, or national restrictions.

Deadline: March 25; November 25 (twice a year)

Awards: The value of the scholarships are remitted through editorial assistance as follows:

Master’s candidates: $750
Doctoral candidates: $2,500
Junior academics: $500

These figures reflect the upper bracket of costs of editorial assistance for master’s theses, doctoral dissertations, and academic journal articles, respectively.

Taiwan Fellowship

This fellowship is sponsored by the Taiwanese government for foreign nationals who are professors, associate professors, assistant professors, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, or doctoral program students at related departments of overseas universities, or are research fellows at an equivalent level in academic institutions abroad. Those who are currently conducting research, teaching, or studying in Taiwan are ineligible. The scholar’s field of study should be in the social sciences and humanities, with a topic related to Taiwan, cross-strait relations, mainland China, the Asia Pacific, and Sinology.

Stipend amounts vary by fellowship level and length of stay.

Eligibility: Foreign nationals who are professors, associate professors, assistant professors, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, or doctoral program students at related departments of overseas universities, or are research fellows at an equivalent level in academic institutions abroad. Those who are currently conducting research, teaching, or studying in Taiwan are ineligible.

Deadline: May 1 to June 30.

Awards: Assistant professors, assistant research fellows, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, doctoral program students, and other candidates recommended by ROC (Taiwan) missions: NT$50,000 ($1600). The minimum duration of a fellowship is three months, and the maximum one year.

University of Iowa Women’s Archives – Kerber Fund Travel Grant

Grant supports travel to Iowa City, Iowa, to conduct research in the Iowa Women’s Archives. Applicants from a variety of backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The strengths of the Iowa Women’s Archives include rich collections on the history of the women’s movement, political activism, African Americans, rural women, and Latinas, especially in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The collections are global in scope. Applicants’ research topics should be strongly supported by the collections of the Iowa Women’s Archives.

Eligibility:

We welcome applications from graduate students, academic and public historians, and independent researchers and writers who reside outside a 100-mile radius of Iowa City, Iowa, and whose research projects would be substantially enriched by the use of materials held by the Iowa Women’s Archives.

Research topics should be strongly supported by the collections of the Iowa Women’s Archives. We encourage each prospective grant applicant to discuss his or her research project and the collections that might support it with the Iowa Women’s Archives staff before submitting an application.

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Short-Term Fellowships

The program provides PhD students or PhD researchers in Europe and North America with opportunities to conduct collaborative research under the guidance of their hosts in universities and other Japanese institutions for a relatively short period of time (1-12 months). A person who has never engaged in research in Japan would be most preferable. The award provides ¥200,000 per month for doctoral recipients and ¥362,000 per month for postdoctoral recipients, plus round-trip airfare and additional benefits. Applicants do not directly submit applications to JSPS. Applications under this program must be submitted to JSPS by a host researcher in Japan via the head of his/her university or institution. The deadlines are for submission to JSPS by the head of the host institution. The applicant should consult with their proposed host about the institution’s internal deadline.

Eligibility: 
All fields of the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences are applicable.

The fellow must be:
(1) a citizen or permanent resident of an eligible country stipulated in the below 1*. Also eligible are persons who have earned a master’s or higher degree and continuously thereafter been engaged in research for a period of at least three years at a university or research institution in an eligible country. Such persons must be from a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan or from Taiwan or Palestine, have conducted research continuously for three or more years before the time their application was submitted, and must possess an excellent research record.
*Eligible countries are the US, Canada, European Union countries , Switzerland, Norway and Russia.

(2) Candidates must have obtained their doctoral degree at a university outside Japan within six years of the date the fellowship goes into effect , or must be currently enrolled in a doctoral course at a university outside Japan, and scheduled to receive a Ph.D. within two years from the time that their research starts in Japan.

Deadline: (these deadlines are for the hosts:) April 5 (starting in October), June 7 (January), October 5 (April), January 11 (July)

Awards: 362,000 yen ($3200) per month for Post-docs; 200,000 yen ($1800) per month for PhD students; airfare; settling-in allowances applicable.

CUNY Graduate Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS) Duberman-Zal Fellowship

An endowed fellowship named for CLAGS founder and first executive director, Martin Duberman, and partner, Eli Zal, this fellowship is awarded to a graduate student, an independent scholar, or an adjunct from any country doing scholarly research on the lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender/queer (LGBTQ) experience. The winner of the fellowship may be asked to participate in CLAGS’s programming the following academic year to present their research project. Award amount is $2,500. University affiliation is not necessary.

Eligibility:  this fellowship is awarded to a graduate student, an independent scholar, or an adjunct from any country doing scholarly research on the lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender/queer (LGBTQ) experience.

Applications must include the following:

A cover letter with your contact information (address, phone number, and e-mail), the title of your project, the names of your recommenders, and the fellowship you are applying for.
A research proposal of 7-10 pages, double-spaced, including references.
A brief statement of how the funds will be used.

China Educational Association of International Exchange Teach in China Program

Teach in China is looking for recent graduates with an interest in teaching, education and/or China for 12-month teaching placements in China.  Successful grantees will be placed at a Chinese school, from elementary to the university level, in locations across China.  Benefits for those selected for the program include: Roundtrip international airfare, local transportation, monthly salary, visa, insurance, and housing. Applicants who have TESOL certification or 2 or more years of teaching experience are highly desired. Those without TEFL/TESOL certification will be required to go through a training leading to being certified TESOL/TEFL instructors. Program start dates are either February or August.

Eligibility: Candidates for CEAIE Teach in China opportunity will have a strong interest in China or in a career teaching, particularly teaching English to speakers of other languages. Eligibility requirements for this opportunity are:

Must be a native speaker of English.
Must be a citizen of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom or the United States of America.
Must be between 20 and 55 years of age.
Must have a bachelor’s degree or above.
Preferred: TESOL certification or two years of teaching experience.

Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation Doctoral Fellowship in Chinese Studies for non-ROC citizens

Doctoral candidates who are non-ROC citizens and who are enrolled in an accredited university in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, or South America may apply for financial support for writing dissertations in the field of Chinese Studies in the humanities and social sciences. Citizens of the ROC should apply for Dissertation Fellowships for ROC Students Abroad.

The Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Taipei, the capital of the Republic of China. The Foundation promotes international scholarly exchange and the understanding of Chinese culture and society overseas.

Applicants must be ABD by application deadline, and successful candidates are expected to complete their dissertations by the end of the grant period.

Eligibility: 

1. Applicants must not accept full-time employment during the grant period, and should inform the Foundation if they are applying for or subsequently receive other sources of funding. The Foundation reserves the right to adjust the terms of the grant (including termination of the grant) should an applicant receive other sources of funding.
2. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited university in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, or South America.
3. Applicants must have qualified for Ph.D. candidacy and be in the last stage of writing the dissertation.
4. Applicants must ask their dissertation adviser to include a paragraph in her/his letter of recommendation stating the likelihood that the applicant can successfully complete the dissertation during the grant period.

Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship in Women’s Studies

The Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship in Women’s Studies encourages original and significant research about women that crosses disciplinary, regional, or cultural boundaries. The WW Women’s Studies Fellowships support the final year of dissertation writing for Ph.D. candidates in the humanities and social sciences whose work addresses topics of women and gender in interdisciplinary and original ways.

The Women’s Studies competition is for projects in the humanities and social sciences; projects in fields such as management, the clinical and biological sciences, and law are not eligible unless they have a demonstrable academic grounding in the humanities and social sciences. Applicants working on health-related issues in the social sciences should consider carefully whether their work demonstrably centers on the topic’s social, cultural, and individual aspects.

Deadline: October 15.

Have you completed all pre-dissertation requirements?
Are you writing on issues related to women, gender, women’s studies or feminist/gender/LGBTQ theory?

Wolfsonian – Florida International University (FIU) Fellowship

The Wolfsonian–FIU Fellowship program promotes scholarly research on The Wolfsonian’s collections. The Wolfsonian’s collection—among the largest university art collections in the country—focuses on North American and European decorative arts, propaganda, architecture, and industrial and graphic design dating from 1850 to 1950. The United States, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands are the countries most extensively represented in the collection, with a smaller but significant number of materials from Austria, Czechoslovakia, France, Japan, the former Soviet Union, Hungary, and more. With over 180,000 objects, the collection includes works on paper (posters, prints, design drawings, and more), furniture, paintings, sculpture, books and ephemera, glass, textiles, ceramics, lighting and other appliances, and beyond.

Fellowships are awarded for full-time research at The Wolfsonian, generally for periods of three to four weeks. Fellowships include a stipend, accommodations, and round-trip travel. The timing of dates will be negotiated with individual awardees. The program is open to holders of master’s or doctoral degrees, Ph.D. candidates, and to others who have a significant record of professional achievement in relevant fields. Scholars from outside of the United States are eligible.
