Editing Press: Laura Bassi Scholarship

The Editing Press is a small company of published academics from Oxford and Cambridge Universities who provide editing, proofreading, and translation services of the highest standard to postgraduates and fellow academics. The Laura Bassi Scholarship was established by Editing Press in 2018 with the aim of providing editorial assistance to postgraduates and junior academics whose research focuses on neglected topics of study, broadly construed, within their disciplines. The scholarships are open to every discipline and are awarded twice a year: December and April.

Eligibility: All currently enrolled master’s and doctoral candidates are eligible to apply, as are academics in the first five years of their employment. There are no institutional, departmental, or national restrictions.

Deadline: March 25; November 25 (twice a year)

Awards: The value of the scholarships are remitted through editorial assistance as follows:

Master’s candidates: $750
Doctoral candidates: $2,500
Junior academics: $500

These figures reflect the upper bracket of costs of editorial assistance for master’s theses, doctoral dissertations, and academic journal articles, respectively.

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Short-Term Fellowships

The program provides PhD students or PhD researchers in Europe and North America with opportunities to conduct collaborative research under the guidance of their hosts in universities and other Japanese institutions for a relatively short period of time (1-12 months). A person who has never engaged in research in Japan would be most preferable. The award provides ¥200,000 per month for doctoral recipients and ¥362,000 per month for postdoctoral recipients, plus round-trip airfare and additional benefits. Applicants do not directly submit applications to JSPS. Applications under this program must be submitted to JSPS by a host researcher in Japan via the head of his/her university or institution. The deadlines are for submission to JSPS by the head of the host institution. The applicant should consult with their proposed host about the institution’s internal deadline.

Eligibility: 
All fields of the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences are applicable.

The fellow must be:
(1) a citizen or permanent resident of an eligible country stipulated in the below 1*. Also eligible are persons who have earned a master’s or higher degree and continuously thereafter been engaged in research for a period of at least three years at a university or research institution in an eligible country. Such persons must be from a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan or from Taiwan or Palestine, have conducted research continuously for three or more years before the time their application was submitted, and must possess an excellent research record.
*Eligible countries are the US, Canada, European Union countries , Switzerland, Norway and Russia.

(2) Candidates must have obtained their doctoral degree at a university outside Japan within six years of the date the fellowship goes into effect , or must be currently enrolled in a doctoral course at a university outside Japan, and scheduled to receive a Ph.D. within two years from the time that their research starts in Japan.

Deadline: (these deadlines are for the hosts:) April 5 (starting in October), June 7 (January), October 5 (April), January 11 (July)

Awards: 362,000 yen ($3200) per month for Post-docs; 200,000 yen ($1800) per month for PhD students; airfare; settling-in allowances applicable.

Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation Doctoral Fellowship in Chinese Studies for non-ROC citizens

Doctoral candidates who are non-ROC citizens and who are enrolled in an accredited university in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, or South America may apply for financial support for writing dissertations in the field of Chinese Studies in the humanities and social sciences. Citizens of the ROC should apply for Dissertation Fellowships for ROC Students Abroad.

The Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Taipei, the capital of the Republic of China. The Foundation promotes international scholarly exchange and the understanding of Chinese culture and society overseas.

Applicants must be ABD by application deadline, and successful candidates are expected to complete their dissertations by the end of the grant period.

Eligibility: 

1. Applicants must not accept full-time employment during the grant period, and should inform the Foundation if they are applying for or subsequently receive other sources of funding. The Foundation reserves the right to adjust the terms of the grant (including termination of the grant) should an applicant receive other sources of funding.
2. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited university in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, or South America.
3. Applicants must have qualified for Ph.D. candidacy and be in the last stage of writing the dissertation.
4. Applicants must ask their dissertation adviser to include a paragraph in her/his letter of recommendation stating the likelihood that the applicant can successfully complete the dissertation during the grant period.

Deadline: October 15.

Awards: The fellowship offers up to $20,000 support for up to one year. Funding for successful applications will be provided in two installments (July and January).

Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship in Women’s Studies

The Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship in Women’s Studies encourages original and significant research about women that crosses disciplinary, regional, or cultural boundaries. The WW Women’s Studies Fellowships support the final year of dissertation writing for Ph.D. candidates in the humanities and social sciences whose work addresses topics of women and gender in interdisciplinary and original ways.

The Women’s Studies competition is for projects in the humanities and social sciences; projects in fields such as management, the clinical and biological sciences, and law are not eligible unless they have a demonstrable academic grounding in the humanities and social sciences. Applicants working on health-related issues in the social sciences should consider carefully whether their work demonstrably centers on the topic’s social, cultural, and individual aspects.

Deadline: October 15.

Eligibility: please consider the following questions to be certain that you are eligible:

Have you completed all pre-dissertation requirements?
Are you writing on issues related to women, gender, women’s studies or feminist/gender/LGBTQ theory?
Are you enrolled in a graduate school in the United States?
Is your area of study in the humanities or social sciences?
Do you expect to complete the Ph.D. by summer 2020?
If the answer to all of these questions is YES, you are eligible to apply for a Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship in Women’s Studies.

Awards: $5,000 to be used for expenses connected with completing their dissertations, such as research-related travel, data work/collection, and supplies.
