Cultural Traditions

Kenya has at least 40 different ethnic African groups. All of them speak very different languages. Kenyan’s have conformed to westernized Islamic forms of dress, with clothes, jewelry, all with their original tribal clothes.

Kenya also listens to their version of pop music. One of the most popular genres is Benga. It combines traditional African drum and dance rhythms with our modern pop and electric sounds.

One of Kenya’s historic culture identity traditions is God’s resting place on Mt. Kenya. The Gikuyu and Embu believed that God came down and lived on Mt. Kenya  when he came from the sky. So they face there houses and doors toward the mountain.

Within Kenya, small talk is an important thing to get to know neighbors or business owners. Meetings rarely have a stopping time. What is important is that everything is communicated and the business meeting is finished. Also, business cards are important. It shows that you or your company is well established and can give constructive ideas.

Unlike in the United States, Kenyans are indirect and aren’t straight to the point. They often use metaphors, analogies, and stories to convey a point.
