Policy Process Lab

The Penn State Harrisburg Policy Process Lab was formally founded in 2022, but its work really began in 2019. Directed by Dr. Daniel J. Mallinson, Associate Professor of Public Policy and Administration, the lab’s work is driven by the interests and vision of its different members. All of the work, however, centers on either better understanding the policy making process or assessing policy to make it better. Our work also largely focuses on policymaking in the American states. Our mission is to produce high quality and high impact social science research for the benefit of scholars, practitioners, and the public. Located near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the lab also seeks opportunities to engage with policymakers, advocacy groups, and citizens on pressing policy problems in the Commonwealth.

The lab has enjoyed financial support from the Center for Rural Pennsylvania, Penn State Presidential Strategic Initiative on Public Impact Research, Penn State Center for Energy Law and Policy, Penn State Center for Socially Responsible Artificial Intelligence, Penn State Commonwealth Campuses Collaboration Programs, the Penn State Harrisburg Smart Home Research Initiative, and Penn State Harrisburg Office of Research and Outreach.

Our research has been published in Perspectives on Politics, Utilities Policy, Business & Politics, Housing & Society, Public Works Management & Policy, Review of Policy Research, Policy Studies Yearbook, and Information Polity, as well as through technical reports issued by the Center for Energy Law and Policy and Center for Rural Pennsylvania.
