The article I chose is about American residents loving the idea of green projects for the public good but they don’t want to live near green projects. The pushback on renewable energy is primarily due to aesthetics and property values. Residents are concerned that their residential environments will lose their natural beauty and property values will fall. There is also fear of noise impacts, human safety and disturbance of virgin land with the use of renewable energy equipment. Many renewable energy construction projects are facing scrutiny now, as they move to build closer to residential areas. A turbine project near Lake Superior was cancelled due to concerns that the turbines would effect tourism, wilderness, fishing and hunting in the L’Anse Township of Michigan. Nebraska took the initiative to create a law that allows landowners to easily challenge new transmission lines for wind farms in court. Some renewable energy companies believe the push back on renewable energy construction could be due to a lack of knowledge and understanding behind the science and benefits.
It is not possible to maintain our current standard of living without venturing into someone’s backyard, because as populations grow land will need to be utilized better. Renewable energy sources will find their way to our backyards. In California, some residents are seeking renewable energy sources to ensure they have power and avoid blackouts. As renewable energy continues to grow, new methods of making the equipment aesthetically appealing will occur. Since it is impossible to avoid NIMBY, we will have to face the issues and come up with solutions to renewable energy human safety, noise pollution, aesthetics, property value, wilderness, etc.
